Counseling for Stress and Trauma

Dr. Cynthia Yesko is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with over 30 years’ experience providing mental health counseling to individuals (children, adolescents, adults), couples, families, and groups for a wide range of issues related to stress and trauma.

Not all stressful and traumatic events are experienced as overwhelming/unsafe. However, when the event is so stressful that it leaves a person feeling helpless and powerless to resolve all of the issues surrounding the event, holistic therapy may help.

Dr. Yesko specializes in the following:

Trauma Counseling

The Holistic Therapy Institute broadly defines trauma to include any stressful event that overwhelms a person and disrupts their sense of safety and connection to others. The following are examples of events that can be experienced as overwhelming/unsafe: childhood sexual, physical, emotional abuse; prolonged exposure to caregivers’ or others’ unhelpful stress patterns, illnesses, addictions, etc.; a sexual assault or rape; disaster, accident, or illness; a divorce and custody battle; job loss, move, or life transition; complicated death of a loved one, or surviving a suicide.

Clergy Abuse Counseling

Clergy abuse includes abuse by religious and institutional authorities such as priests, ministers, bishops, deacons, nuns, coaches, teachers, and others. Abuse can be sexual, physical, emotional, and spiritual in nature. This type of abuse can not only disrupt a connection with others but it can also lead to disconnection from a higher power. Some clergy abuse survivors can be retraumatized as they relive their story for the purpose of reporting it to religious institutions/courts, and can even feel empty when they find that a settlement isn’t adequate to repair the deep wounds. Other survivors have reached out to their religious institutions to report the abuse and have been retraumatized when they are either ignored and silenced, are told they are not credible, or are not believed.

Betrayal Trauma Counseling

Betrayal trauma is an intimate partner betrayal such as a sexual or emotional infidelity, an affair, or a sex addiction. The betrayal may include broken promises/vows, deception/lies, and violated trust. The betrayed partner may become overwhelmed and feel helpless and powerless as events unfold such as the discovery of the betrayal and the disclosure of details by the betraying partner. In turn, the partner, who initiated the betrayal, may witness the partner’s trauma, become overwhelmed, and feel helpless and powerless to move forward. This type of trauma may cause a disconnection between the intimate partners and disrupt connections with the partners’ support network.
